Council-subsidised Pickups

Some councils pay for their residents' Pickups. The rules below are the same in every council that does.

Is my Pickup subsidised by my council?

Some councils pay for their residents' Regular Pickups; other sizes may be discounted. If your council is one of them, your account shows the subsidised Pickup when you book, at your address. The councils are listed on where we collect.

How do I book my subsidised Pickup?

Subsidised Pickups aren't scheduled for you: book each one.

  1. Log in to your account on the web or in the ReSmart app.
  2. Choose the subsidised Pickup on your home screen.
  3. Don't see it? Choose Book an On-Demand Pickup: the Regular size shows as free.
Why do I need a card for a free Pickup?

Your council pays for Pickups that go ahead. If a Pickup fails (your items aren't out, you cancel after 2pm the day before (Sydney time), or the items can't be collected), a failure fee applies, so we need a card on file. It is charged only then. Your card is held by Stripe, not by us (card details).

How often can I book a subsidised Pickup?

One at a time, once every 4 weeks, on the days the app offers for your area. Book the next one after your last one is done.

Will I be charged if my subsidised Pickup fails?

Yes. A failed subsidised Pickup costs the full standard Pickup price, not the subsidised rate, depending on your council's agreement with us (our terms, section 6). To avoid it, have your items out on the day and make any change before 2pm the day before (Sydney time).

Why did my free Pickups stop?

There are two usual reasons:

  • They're no longer booked for you. Since November 2025, subsidised Pickups aren't scheduled automatically: book each one.
  • Your council's funding ended. Each council's subsidy runs for a set period. When it ends, your account shows standard prices: a Regular Pickup is $29, or the Monthly plan is $19 every 4 weeks (prices).
I'm moving: do I keep my subsidised Pickups?

The subsidy goes with your address, not with you. Update your address: if your new council subsidises Pickups, you see it when you book; if not, standard prices apply.
