Why does it matter?

Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (NRW) is an awesome opportunity for people to improve their recycling efforts and promote sustainability in their communities.

Let’s take a look at the state of recycling in Australia:

  • Australia generated 4 million tonnes of plastic in 2023–24, yet only 13% was recycled.

  • Sydney is en route to hitting landfill capacity by 2030.

  • 10-12,000 battery related fires happen in Australia every year!

  • More than 200,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfills each year.

 FAQs

  • At ReSmart, we recycle many different items. We are partnered with certified partners to divert valuable resources from landfill.

    • Soft plastics will be turned back into oil or transformed into additives for asphalt.

    • Textiles will be donated to local charities or recycled into fibers or more.

    • Blister packs will be separated into aluminium and plastic, which will then be reused in steel products and construction materials.

    • Polystyrene is granulated and pelletised for reuse in various applications, from building insulation, park benches and bee hives.

  • Some great spots to leave your bags on collection day:

    • Outside your front door.

    • By the intercom or letterbox

    • If you’re concerned about the driver being able to find them, or you have somewhere more accessible in mind, just add a Pickup note when you make your booking or snap a photo of where you left them.

    • Print this sign if you’re concerned that someone will move your bags.

If you live in a multi-apartment complex, we recommend you leave your bag in an area that can be accessed by anyone, like near the building entrance.

  • Here’s how to pack your bags like a pro:

    • Group your soft plastics together (a plastic shopping bag works well!) so that they don’t fly around and are easy to pick up.

    • Pop batteries into a zip lock or small plastic bag on top of your recycling so our drivers can spot them quickly.

    • Seal your aluminium coffee capsules a small plastic bag.

    • Our favourite trick is to keep all the smaller items on top of the bags.

These small steps help our team sort faster and make sure nothing gets missed - meaning even more items are saved from landfill. On behalf of the planet (and our friendly drivers), we say thank you!
